Mavea to Fakarava

Located in the Tuamotu Archipelago, Fakarava which means rock (faka) and beauty (rava) is as its name suggests one of the most beautiful islands in French Polynesia.

Atoll classified as a "biosphere reserve by UNESCO", paradise for divers and nature lovers, Fakarava moves with its authenticity, its postcard landscapes and its rich and unique ecosystem of endemic species.

The Fakarava Biosphere Reserve includes 7 islands: Aratika, Fakarava, Kauehi, Niau, Raraka, Taiaro, and Toau.

One of the peculiarities of this reserve is that it has small closed lagoons like those of Taiaro and Niau, and large lagoons open. Fakarava is the second biggest lagoon  after Rangiroa, and has the biggest pass of French Polynesia, nearly 2 km. The lagoon is 60 km from north to south and 40km for east to west.

The fauna and flora are remarkable, including rare, protected and endemic species. Cultural heritage is also recognized for some archaeological remains such as marae.
